CCEA SCHOOL LETTER, END OF 2008 SUMMER CAMP

Friday, 8/22/08

Dear New Sprouts Families and Friends:

As the second year of New Sprouts summer camp draws to a close this week, we'd like to send out a heartfelt thanks to all our families of campers.

In these past three weeks of August, campers immersed themselves in the world of Chinese culture and language. They recited poems of famous Tang poets, danced and sang silly children's songs, practiced brush painting and calligraphy, played Chinese children's games, participated in a mock "Olympic" games, explored ancient Chinese inventions, and studied and constructed traditional Chinese buildings and gardens.

As Confucius once said,
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." We were amazed to see the learning taking place in the classrooms guided by our wonderful teachers - Teacher Zhang's children busily mixing colors and learning their color vocabulary; campers drawing animals and naming them in Chinese in Teacher Wang's class; Teacher Wu and her children making their own pretend "money" to use in the market; and Teacher Zhang and her campers singing and moving to childhood Chinese rhymes. These are the experiences your children have taken with them and the learning that has grown from them.

On behalf of the staff at New Sprouts, we would like to express our gratitude to our volunteer parent scientist, Annette Chan, who conducted age appropriate and super-fun hands-on experiments week after week with all our campers. A big thank-you also goes out to the parent volunteers who helped make the cooking activities and field trips a huge success.

We have planted a seed of learning in each camper's heart and mind. With your continuing support at home and throughout the year, we know your child's love of learning will sprout by leaps and bounds. Farewell now to the summer fun. We eagerly await for our next time together.

We invite you to send us your constructive feedback about our summer camp program by taking a short 10-minute online survey. Thanks in advance for helping us continually improve our program for your children. (The survey has been sent to parents of CCEA 2008 Summer Camp students. If you have not received the survey link, please contact Jackie Say.)

Finally, we invite all of you to participate in our first annual Mooncake Festival Dinner Fundraiser on Sunday, September 14th, at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church, from 6:00-7:30pm. Flyers have been sent home with your campers with more information and for RSVP purposes.

Faye Wu, Head of School, and Jackie Say, Program Manager
